Week 2 is Live! Calculating your thread & Playing with scale

Hi there, this week is all about calculating your thread and scale for your project. Below, we talk about both calculating the length and calculating the thickness. I think this is a matter of persona preference , though  I do think thinner cording is seen more in the "Shop Style" finish.

The coursework is available in the class portal or view the webpage here (the information is the same in both places to help improve accessibility to it).

Hi Amanda! Question - do the calculations account for the loss of length due to the knots at the end/taking off the jig? Thanks! 🙃

Cording Jigs

Making cording doesn’t need a lot of special equipment. Sure, you need a cording maker of some kind but beyond that, a pair of scissors and a jig are all you need. ✨🫶🏻🪡💚

Scroll to see samples of jigs around my house. 🏠 ➡️

1. THE OG - CUP HOOKS: made of 4 cup hooks in a store room shelf, this is what I use to make 90% of my cording. I like that the hooks align with my Lacis cording maker for an accurate and tight twist by holding tension equally.

2. AT MY WORKSPACE -SHOWER CURTAIN RINGS: You can even find these at the dollar store. Just need something stable to hook em on. Maybe a wire shelf at your house would work

3. CABINET PULLS: If I’m hanging with the kids, sometimes I’ll quickly crank out a few, just using these for a 2 color twist

Week 1 Office Hours

Hi All!

Here's the recording from last night's office hours.

https://youtu.be/xVJtLje9fE4

We chattad about:

  • Thoughts on keeping or removing the knot from the cording when you add it to the ornament (which we'll get to in a lot of detail coming up!). My take: I make cording and knot at the end, but you can definitely use tape to reduce some of the wasted cording. A knot can gobble it up. The calcuator is coming this week so I'm excited to give some more clarity on what length to cut your floss and pearle.

  • When making cording with DMC Floss, do you ply it before making your bundles? Answer: No - one strand, right off the skein is the starting point for a 12 strand bundle. Use that as one of the twelve. Don't ply.

Can’t wait to watch! Thanks for listing the questions and answers. I also wonder what to do with the knot. It doesn’t eat up a lot of the cord!!!

Finishing

Hi, all! My name is Mary Lou Simpson. I’m a mature needlepointer (read old) and stitch every day. I have been stitching for nearly 50 years (told you I was old) but love it. Because I stitch every day, I have stacks of finishing to do. That’s why I’m here. I love the way Amanda teaches and can’t wait to learn more useful details dealing with accurate measurement.
